How KT Group’s Whizz terminal became the go-to sports betting kiosk for the North American market

The challenge

In 2018, the repeal of PASPA (Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act) marked a seismic shift in the US gaming industry. For the first time, states could legalize sports betting — unlocking a gold rush of opportunity across the country.

As major operators scrambled to enter this newly opened market, Churchill Downs — famed for the Kentucky Derby — sought an innovative self-service betting terminal to spearhead its expansion into digital wagering. KT Group was invited to tender. 

The challenge? Create a US-ready sports betting kiosk that met strict compliance, delivered an outstanding user experience, and could scale with the market.

The strategy

KT Group recognised this moment as more than just a product launch — it was a chance to define a category. The team quickly got to work adapting their proven hardware design for the new North American regulatory and technical environment.

Through close collaboration with Churchill Downs and its BetAmerica brand, KT Group:

  • Delivered a customized version of its self-service terminal — the Whizz — tailored for US betting flows
  • Completed successful testing and deployment at Churchill Downs’ pilot locations
  • Proved the kiosk’s capability in a high-profile launch, earning industry credibility and attention

This pivotal launch caught the eye of United Tote, a leading US tote system provider. Seeing potential in the Whizz platform, United Tote partnered with KT Group to take the solution nationwide.

The solution

United Tote formally unveiled the Whizz terminal under its new United Tote Gaming division at the global G2E Gaming Expo — one of the most important stages in the industry. The product received an enthusiastic response and led directly to a high-profile commercial rollout.

Within months:

  • Whizz terminals were installed by DraftKings, one of the fastest-growing sportsbook brands in the country
  • The solution was deployed across multiple states, expanding in parallel with new sports betting legislation
  • KT Group delivered 38 Whizz terminals to the new DraftKings sportsbook bar at the iconic Chicago Cubs stadium — enabling real-time betting alongside live games

The Whizz terminal quickly established itself as the premier betting kiosk across North America. With clients including BetAmerica, DraftKings, GAN, and Wynn Resorts, it’s become the platform of choice for self-service sports betting at scale.
